Building Strong Communities Through Technology Education
Case Studies
North Division Virtual University High School
80 students at North Division High School worked with MATA and MIAD instructors and degree students to create dynamic video documentaries. MATA Community Media has partnered with Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) for over 6 years. The documentaries were about Africa and included a live teleconference interview with Senator Russ Feingold about his involvement with the Senate Subcommittee on African Affairs.
Golda Meir School
Golda Meir has partnered with MATA for the past 4 years. Educational Coordinators make weekly visits to the school to teach 3rd through 5th grade Video Club members aspects of making videos for television production.
Students have been able to produce and videotape their own television series called, "Focus on Learning: Peaceful Means." The emphasis of this television news magazine is civility. The students also videotape school activities as well as individual teachers' and students' projects. The series is broadcast to classrooms every other Friday.
MATA also broadcasts Golda Meir School concerts and events on channel 14 and 96. Golda Meir received a considerable pledge of money from a viewer; the donor saw a concert on channel 96 and called the school stating that was the type of educational program she would like to support. The pledge was given without any solicitation from Golda Meir School.
Andrew S. Douglas Community Academy
Unlike youth programs featured on other stations where the youth are utilized as on-camera talent, students that train at MCM Technology Education Department produce every program. 12 students received training and went on to produce a number of programs on prolific topics. Programs featured guest lectures during Black History month, book and movie reviews, poetry readings, solo singing performances, and interviews with national celebrities: Dionne Warrick, Nikki Giovanni, Glen Turman, and Dottie Peoples.
Forest Home Avenue Elementary School
Trainings at MCM resulted in the production of "Getting to Know Forest Home Avenue School," a program developed to help new students at the school become acquainted with the school's administrators, teachers, and parents. Another program developed by the students brought together the science learned in the classroom with the technology learned at MCM to produce, "Quit Playing Games with My Heart." This program investigated the heart and lung anatomy using the lungs and heart of an actual cow.
Grand Avenue School
113 students participated in MCM orientation, portable camera training, linear and non-linear edit training, and main studio training. These trainings resulted in the student's production of a "Wellness Promotion" public service announcement identifying ways to integrate health education into the middle school curriculum. Students also produced several programs that included a quiz show on local and state history and culture, a talk show that discussed entertainment alternatives for teens on a budget, and a program that celebrated the diversity of Grand Avenue Middle School.
